Enjoyed the interesting discussion with Sheree Bega and making a contribution to her article ‘Beat the heat with cool zones’ in the Mail & Guardian on what can be done to reduce the impact of extreme heat projected under climate change.

The article explores a number of approaches such as planting more trees (to provide shade and create cooler microclimates), cool roofs (to reduce heat gain through the roofs), using community buildings as cooling zones (to provide access to cool spaces for vulnerable people in hot environments and buildings), changing work schedules (to reduce exposure to mid-day heat) and providing reliable and accessible sources of drinking water (to enable people to keep hydrated and cool).
