Developing a Research Agenda for Smart and Sustainable Built Environments

“Smart” and “Sustainable” have become buzzwords in literature about built environment and cities and are generally used to describe approaches which enhance the environmental performance through the use of technology. However, wide usage has meant that these terms have become increasingly vague and generically applied. Since these terms were coined and applied to built environments, there have also been significant changes in our understanding of sustainability and radical shifts in how technology is applied to improve performance. Therefore there is a need to review and update these terms. Defining these concepts and their implications in a structured way is used to propose a theoretical framework that can be used to organise research within the field. A critical evaluation of this framework is undertaken to ascertain its value as means of defining a research agenda within the field and recommendations for further development are made.
